Which would you rather have?

Here is a stupid poll, but what the heck, eh? Or maybe it's the new math?

Would you rather have $2 in nickels or $2 in quarters (assuming both are circulated, nothing numismatic and no silver in the quarters?

I would rather have $2 in nickels, here's why.

Using the rates at coinflation for 2/14/07 the metal content in $2 worth of nickels (40) is $2.756, while the metal content of $2 worth of quarters (8) is $.3769 cents.

For me, it's a hands down, no brainer. . .GIVE ME NICKELS! :birthday: :emotions16:

When I receive change from a vendor I ask for nickels and they always oblige me.

Which do you prefer?

I haven't "spent" a nickel or penny in the last year. I just chuck them in a jar.
I still spend all my dimes and quarters.

Great poll Great Ag. This issue has been bugging me for some time, I want to see how GIM splits on it. Is it an open poll?

Re: Which would you rather have?

Give me nickels and give me cents,
I prefer the way a nickel dents.

What's a quarter but a quartered buck.
I'd trade a quarter for a WTF.

Stupid rhymes are a waste of time.
Unless I could trade em for a silver dime.

RealJack

For practical purposes or spending or carrying in my pocket, I'd prefer quarters.

For hoarding for metal's worth, nickels, of course. Just don't know if it's worth it to hang on to them. $2.75 for $2 worth of nickels is a pretty nice deal, though...

Hey, Naccarato:

It's a closed poll. Only if you volunteer your vote, like I, will anyone know how you voted.

I must say, I figured more people would vote for "Y'all are stupid - who cares" as this is about nickels and not PMs.

When the time comes to bring all the hoarded metal to a smelter and the man tells me he can't smelt these "coins" as the mint stated it is against the law, I will very patiently tell him that he needs to update his prescription for glasses, contacts, or he needs them as all I can see are, COPPER/NICKEL SLUGS. Nary a "coin" in sight. :bull-emoticon: LET'S GO NICKEL BULLS!

Who knows, copper and silver may attain PM status in relation to fiat anyways. I think anyways who doesn't "care" somewhat is just throwing "money" away.

Can't debate this.

I sort my change at the end of the day. Quarters are for laundry. Nickels go in a coffee can. Pre 82 Pennies, in a 5 gal. jug. Some zincs have a jug too. I hit the streets with dimes and zincs in my pocket.

Since it is illegal to melt them, how are you going to turn a profit by selling your nickels?

You have to figure that in the near future they are going to have to replace them. At that point, just like unmelted silver coinage, they are going to have a greater numismatic value more in line with their metal content. Patience my friend, their time will come. I for one don't plan on getting rich off my nckels and pennies, but at the same time I don't walk down the street dropping money on the sidewalk just for the heck of it. Every little bit helps.

Hey, SLV:

Read my post #6. Short answer is I am not melting or smelting coins. I am melting/smelting copper and nickel slugs.

T'aint nothing illegal about meltin' slugs. Not only that, but the receipt I would receive will reflect this. X amount of FRNs for so many pounds of copper and nickel slugs.

You have to remember "definitions" are very important. Just because the gov't calls "it" one thing does not make it so.

For example, in the state of Delaware only vehicles need to be registered. Private automobiles do not. However, at this point in time my automobile is registered with the state.

TA, you have more fantastic one-liners than anyone else here, this one especially. The funny thing is not 1 in 100,000 people would even understand what it means, which makes it even better!

You'd better get the two first spouse coins, with many of them coming in with a sub 5000 total mintage, their day in the sun will surely manifest. Get two Van Burens now before they stop making them next month.

Re: Which would you rather have?

OK let's do this

$10 in Nickels= 200 nickels - 200 CuNi Clad .05c > base metal melt value = $9.57

Total Face Value: $10
Coin Type: 1946-2009 Jefferson Nickel
Copper Price: $2.9691 / pound
Nickel Price: $8.4565 / pound

Statistics:

There are 1.6535 pounds of copper and 0.5512 pounds of nickel in $10 face value of nickel(s).

A roll of nickel(s) has 40 coins and is valued at $1.91 when copper is at $2.9691 / lb and nickel at $8.4565 / lb (exact value is $1.91403131246).

10 USD in Quarter Dollars = 40 CuNi clad .25 > base metal melt value = WOW $1.71

Values Used:

Total Face Value: $10
Coin Type: 1965-2009 Washington Quarter
Copper Price: $2.9691 / pound
Nickel Price: $8.4565 / pound

Statistics:

There are 0.4584 pounds of copper and 0.0417 pounds of nickel in $10 face value of quarter(s).

A roll of quarter(s) has 40 coins and is valued at $1.71 when copper is at $2.9691 / lb and nickel at $8.4565 / lb (exact value is $1.71312902509).

PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR BASE METALS ESPECIALLY COPPER @ Ni

AND HOARD PENNIES.. I almost have a roll of wheaties!

THE GVMT is Giving it away ( at a small fee) plus taxes and a disclaimer that It was lost in the old chemistry accident of 97 anyway.

BTW,
ALL THESE are up for grabs and if you want war nickels there is a nice or 2 --- some are buffalo heads -- look upper right - then down-- little sac in there.

Actually one of the bigger ones!

Re: Which would you rather have?

what is the current price of Cupronickle? It seems that whenever this topic comes up, it is pointed out that war nickles are not worth their silver spot price because separating it at the refiners is costly, however the cupronickle is immediately usable in industry. but then the value is calculated by coinflaition.com by separating the content...
just an observation.
what is the current price of the particular blend of cupronickle used in nickles?

Let's see if any of you old timers remember this tune...

JIMMY HAD A NICKEL
Al Goodhart, Al Hoffman, Maurice Sigler

1. Jimmy had a nickel,
Didn't have it long,
He didn't have it long,
'Cause the kids found out that
Jimmy had a nickel.
Jimmy had a nickel.
Jimmy had a nickel.
Jimmy had a nickel.

2. Jimmy tried to hide it
But that would never do.
That would never do,
'Cause the kids all knew that
Jimmy had a nickel.
Jimmy had a nickel.
Jimmy had a nickel.
Jimmy had a nickel.

[bridge] Down the street his eager feet
Found their way to the candy store.
When he got there, holy gee,
He never knew he had so many friends before.

3. Jimmy had a sweetheart.
She was waiting too,
And now the kids are blue,
'Cause the kids found out.......

Re: Which would you rather have?

I voted Nickels. Simply because, in addition to the better bulk metal value, the more coins you have, the better the chance of possibly getting one with some numi value. JMO.
